and the award for the worst blogger goes to ...
ME!! oh, there are so many people to thank ... where do i start? wow, i'm terrible eh? a month ... again. sheesh. it's one of those things, when you get too far behind, the thought of trying to catch up is so imposing ... so you just don't. i've had a bad case of that.well, we have been doing ... things. life and work has been busy. we've been camping, visited family and old friends, saw a high school football game (my old high school was having the best year in school history ... so we went up and watched them play in the sectional finals ... losing to the 2A juggernaut -- Jimtown, grrr), among other things. busy busy busy.
and the house. here are a few things we've done of late:
- Chrissy painted the upstairs hallway/landing! that's a nice one to have done, it really looks sharp up there. it's the same color as the "upper" color of the living room (follows up the stairs and wraps the whole landing area).
- continued working on the grass. since last time, i've done the final 2 fertilizings of the year. one of those included a weed killing component (broadleaf). i think some of the grass wasn't ready for it as there are a few spots that have some brown shoots after that. i think it will recover fine though. in general, the grass is looking pretty good. it looks so much more like, well, grass than before ... check out this old shot from when we moved in.
- also outside, we've gone through and pulled dead stuff out (veggies, annuals, etc.). i did a thorough raking this past weekend, hopefully a final one at that. i also played roofer a little bit. there is a slight leak in the roof over the downstairs bathroom ... only shows up on heavy/lengthy rains. there is a low spot in that corner and i think a small pond forms and a little trickles in a loose edge seam. i smeared a bunch of polyurethane caulk in there, hopefully that stopped it.
- i finally got the upstairs hallway light to work properly! what i thought was a bad light was really a bad fake-electrician (me). i wasn't getting the wirenuts tight enough apparently ... they were coming loose. the junction box there is really crammed so they seem to have worked loose when connecting the light before. not this time ...
- we put window film on almost all the windows. basically shrinkwrapped them. hopefully that cuts down on drafts and heat loss. it's pretty amazing, you don't really notice it even with the shades up (upstairs). downstairs you don't see it at all since there are shears over all the windows. wow, now this is some great blogging ... a photo of something virtually invisible. i rule.
some projects we hope to do this winter:
- crown moulding upstairs (hallway and bedrooms)
- crown moulding in dining room
- shoe moulding throughout (where we put hardwood)
- finish the stairs
- totally gut the downstairs bathroom (new tub, walls, floor, vanity -- keeping the light and toilet, if anyone wants the seashell shower just let us know)
- re-do a bunch of the kitchen (new counter, sink, drawer/door fronts & hardware, tin ceiling & crown moulding & backsplash, new paint---probably will go ahead and skim out the walls and refinish the trim while we're there).
the bathroom project will include some new plumbing and adding a shower head to the upstairs bathtub via a ceiling mounted rectangular rod (so we can rip out the downstairs ... and not have to wait a couple weeks between showers ... unless you WANT us to do that). overall pretty ambitious i guess, but i'm hopeful. some of those projects will come together pretty quick ... or in nice rewarding chunks.
i'll close with some pics of Hazel. first she seems to enjoy reading slashdot with me ... then i think she starts not liking the whole computer thing (especially Craigslist apparently). i think she also believes we keep the thermostat too low.
