i can see clearly now OR it's a high def world

well, it's the new year ... and the sanding isn't done yet -- despite the hopes of the last post. i haven't had as much time as i thought to work on it ... and it's not much fun, so i don't work too hard at making time either. but, we have made progress. we are done through the landing and about 1.5 steps past it. the landing took quite some time as you might guess. most steps (1 set: tread, riser, stringers) take between 2 and 3 hours ... and there was probably 3+ hours each for Chrissy and I to do the landing. luckily, we're getting toward the end finally. maybe by the end of the week we'll get there. we look forward to not having a fine layer of dust over the entire house.

the
TV has arrived and is all set up! ahh, wonderous HDTV. as i type, i'm enjoying the BCS championship game in crystal-clear gloriousness! it's real purdy ... mmmhuh. it only got average reviews, so i was a bit afraid i wouldn't be happy with it (bought it because of the bang-for-the-buck factor) ... but so far that is not the case ... we love it (even Chrissy admitted it was pretty nice). we're getting all the local networks in high def along with a few other digital (but no HD shows) channels (including a good music video channel very unlike MTV). we're amazed that the crazy old antenna up there can pick up and transfer that much data (HD video, Dolby Digital surround sound, program data/time). all this and the preamp isn't even here yet ... that should hopefully open up a few more programming choices. i'm very impressed with PBS's HD programming so far ... interesting programs with stunny scenery. very cool. also cool ... i commented to my brother that the TV was even cheaper now (on Amazon) than when i got it. he sent me a link to this article about the unpublished Amazon 30-day price guarantee policy. i tested it ... it's true ... $28 extra dollars refunded off the already amazing price i got it for! Amazon, you are my hero. you had me at sale, you had me at sale. DVD's look pretty amazing also. we got a new DVD player with some gift cards we had. our old one was pretty vintage (over 5 yrs old) ... not even progressive scan. quite the electronics upgrade for us this week!

upgrade for this week ... 2 pieces of living room furniture (coming Weds)!

in other news, we headed up north
for the Miller Christmas this past weekend. my mom just got back from Arizona visiting my bro out there, so we delayed our get-together til now. we had a lot of fun, but of course it was a bit sad to be minus another brother this year (hard to believe Nate's moved over 2.5 years go ... Jim's already about 6 mos.). while up there we stopped in to check on Dave's new herd of hens ... they are growing quite nicely (at an amazing 148/150 survival rate!). in a blast from the past ... the A-frame supporting the water cooler in the picture is made from one of the lofts i made while in college! glad to see my loft-building legacy lives on ... albeit in a chicken coop. enjoy, my fine feathered friends. may my loft inspire you to lay the finest tasting eggs in all the land. (oh, and the other picture is Dave and Agne wearing the animal towels we got Daniel and Benjamin. we're not sure who's going to use them more ...).

oh, and here's a pic from one of Hazel's latest "expeditions". what setting do you use for cats?? permanent press?
