i believe ... in miracles

a miracle has happened friends. yes. in our very home. some thought it might never happen (some might = me, some might also = Chrissy, Hazel claims she always believed but i have my doubts). i hope you are sitting down to read this, since i know so many people read blogs standing up like me. this past Saturday afternoon/evening our disbelief, and maybe yours, was proved unfounded ... the stairs are actually done! (much applause, cheers).

for dramatic effect ... here is the route we took to get there. first, how they looked when we moved in, with brand new builders beige carpet:
with the carpet gone:
after removing tack strips and such (note paint blobs e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e):
and after sanding:

after staining:
and finally, after 2 coats of clear shellac ... i present ... the stairs (cue hallelujah chorus) -- sorry about the glare, not much light so had to use flash:

the shellacing was a bit ... odiforous. picture yourself stuck inside a bottle of vodka for about 4 hours. it's gotta be something like that (if you remember from our past experiences with shellac, you'll know it's in solution with denatured alcohol). i think the 2nd picture (the landing) is interesting. look at the strips of wood on the landing from right to left (skipping the first piece because that was the nosing piece) and pay attention to the grain in the wood. whoever installed that area obviously did not care that the 4 boards he bought had radically different grain patterns. didn't even care enough to mix them up much before he put them down. but maybe it's just perfectionists like me who notice stuff like that.

all told, i think we spent roughly 60 hours refinishing ... not including removing the carpet and associated random nails, tack strips, and ample staples from at least 2 generations of carpet (i'm guessing another 6-10 hrs). i wonder how a carpet runner would look on the stairs? hahahaha. ok. not. i think i'd have to shoot myself if we covered them up after all that work. we're really happy with the results (despite a few imperfections and the stain looking darker than the floors), almost as happy as we are about the fact that it's done! done. done. as a bonus, we (and by we, i mean Chrissy because i was sick and lazy) were finally able to really clean up all the dust (and take down the dusty garland on the rails).

and for more pictures, the new furniture. we've had it for probably a month now i think. it's finally getting nicely broken in ... you don't feel like you're sitting on big flat rocks anymore. we're really happy with it, especially for the supercheap Ashley furniture price :-). sorry, again our house doesn't photograph well at night.

we moved the old couch upstairs into the office, along with the old TV (so i can watch basketball when Grey's Anatomy is on or something). the other chair is in the guest bedroom now.
not pictured among the multitude of pictures in this post ... is all the freakin snow we got. i think we ended up with about 15" of new stuff. i got some pics, but they need some tweaking before posting, so maybe next time. might try to get some more too.

ok, so what's next ... the exciting world of shoe moulding! i know, edge of your seat excitement. it does mean i can bust out the new miter saw and brad nailer. the fun never ends.

Super Bowl Champs!!

Colts win!! Colts win!! Wooooohooo! Yes indeed, the Colts have won the Super Bowl. It was somewhat of a win-win situation for me as they were playing my 2nd favorite team, but I just couldn't cheer much for a team with Rex Grossman as their QB. Plus, the Colts are just so gosh darn lovable. I mean, how can anyone cheer against such good guys?? The leadup to the game (and after of course) have been a lot of fun. The town is just Colts crazy. Banners and signs everywhere, buildings lit up blue, tailgate parties (inside of course due to the icebox outside). Of course the game was just amazing. I was hoarse for about a day after. Don't tell the NFL, but the screen we were watching on was larger than 55" (seriously, what's the deal with that crazy rule).

Monday was the welcome home celebration for the team. It started with a freezing cold parade through downtown (orginally scheduled for 4pm). This was delayed about 2 hours because of their plane getting in late and some last minute plan changes. The parade ended in the RCA Dome for a big rally. We (me and some friends, Chrissy had some last minute orders come in at work so couldn't go ... bummer) skipped the parade part so we could forsure get a seat in the Dome. Good thing we did, we got there about 4:30 and the upper deck was almost full already. We managed to find some seats near the 50 yard line about 15 rows from the top. Not too shabby. They ended up letting about 45,000 in. There was more room, but at some point i guess the fire marshall said they didn't want any more people in there despite some open seats. It looked like there was a pretty amazing turnout for the parade, despite the bitterly cold weather and long delay. The rally was a lot of fun. They replayed the game while we waited. Eventually, the team arrived to quite a reception. That place definitely gets loud! There was a short program where some of the team and few others spoke ... here are some highlights (sorry for the quality, remember i was in the nosebleeds):

The crowd (waiting patiently):

Coach Dungy, Jim Irsay (Owner) and Bill Polian (President) ... and a certain Vince Lombari trophy:

Some of the team (incl. Manning, Wayne, Mathis, etc.):

the defense:

Here are some videos i uploaded to Youtube (some of the audio got out of sync when i uploaded, not sure why ... i'm a Youtube newbie):

In other news, Hazel had some dental work done today. a recent vet check up found the reason for her bad (really really bad) breath -- some rotting teeth. we think it's meth mouth from when she was on the streets. she must have been quite the wild one in her day. she basically need a good cleaning and have 2 of her "tiny" molars removed (i guess there are large and tiny molars or something). she seems a bit out of it, but has been seeming to get better steadily. the vet thinks she'll be totally back to normal in a day or so.

The stair project is almost done! i finished the sanding last weekend and got them stained. that was a lot of staining ... 4 hours i think. my wrist was killing me the next day from all the rubbing. i'll work on getting 2 coats of shellac down this weekend -- then done! i'm fairly happy with how it's turning out. the stain is a bit darker looking than the floors (the soft pine stairs took more stain the harder oak floors), but not too bad. a lot of the imperfections that i couldn't sand out were decently hidden by the stain too. it's so fun to see how they look now compared to when we got here! that was a lot o' freakin' work though. so ... much ... sanding. glad that's done. it's also nice to not have the plastic sheeting hanging from the ceiling anymore -- the living room looks so much nicer without that, although it gave it a modern, industrial feel if you like that sorta thing. i'll try to get updated pics soon.

and you know what i forgot to mention ... we got new living room furniture about a month ago. i'll try to get pics of this soon also.

ok, done for now. stay warm (we got about 7" of snow yesterday, how bout you?).
